I grew up believing that to be close to God, you had to hurt a little.

The more you sacrificed, the more spiritual you were. The more you endured, the more faithful you seemed. We admired people who stayed in hard marriages “for the glory of God,” who smiled through grief, who refused to name abuse because forgiveness was a faster virtue than honesty.
